I, Daniel and Jack did a micro task and it was to produce an opening scene to movie to the thriller genre. The thriller genre keeps the audience in suspense and excited, where techniques such as cliff-hangers are used. We took this genre and we used its stereotypical image as being a crime thriller. Also we did by using a slow pace in music to a build-up in pace to give the dramatic effect an audience feel something is about to happen. We not only followed the thriller genre through the music but also through things like the setting as at the opening it is set in a dark room with various props to enhance the atmosphere in which is dark and mysterious, just like a stereotypical thriller, as we thought it may have not been suspenseful if the media piece was set in daytime. We also switched to a confined woods like area as this is a typical setting compared to other thriller genre movies and media projects. We also wanted no dialogue which leaves the audience questioning what’s happening which create the effect of suspense and excitement. As well as this we had the camera follow the protagonist as the main character looks around revealing more props on what happened at the crime the scene where the audience see the antagonists, but the protagonist doesn’t, therefore creating suspense and keeping in to the genre of the media project as the audience knows something that the characters don’t. We also kept the diagetic sound to a minimum to things like the opening and closing therefore keeping attention to the music (non-diagetic sound) and the effect this can have on bringing in what’s happening in the scene and helping it be more appealing and adrenaline rushing just like the genre we were portraying.
How does your media product represent
particular social groups?
Our media
product represents middle aged people onwards. As thrillers takes a lot of
working out and also there may be ethical problems this was for children under
12 as certain guidelines would have to be followed like not much violence or
gore, and this would make it harder to portray the genre thriller. Our media
project also compels from the norm or stereotypical view of a detective as being
older, as an older character can be portrayed as wise in which people usually
see investigators as. As well the antagonist is also young along with the props
found may be classed as a teenagers items for example a cap at the crime scene.
This links the idea a teenager has been murdered, and this is stereotypical in the
view that it is always teenagers getting into trouble and mischief.
