Our media project is to create a film opening of the genre we choose, the film opening must last at least two minutes and should include camera movements, sound effects and editing.
Age Ratings
Audience Research
The results of our questionnaire came back that people thought the age range that most watched crime films and were interested by crime film were 26:31 year olds. However saying this all age ranges were highly submitted after 18 year olds. Therefore our suitable audience would be anyone
over age of 18 years olds. Putting this into a targeted audience would be 26:31.
Out of all the questionnaires we handed out the response rate was 100% and we found that 70% of the people we asked were interested in the crime genre. Quite a few of the questionnaires handed out were handed to under 18 year olds as well. Therefore we found even though people think that under 18 year olds have little to no interest in the crime genre, we found that they do have a interest in the crime genre, however from feedback this is usually in collaboration with another genre like comedy or thriller.
From our research found in the questionnaires we found that the stereotypical setting of a crime genre film would be on settings that portray the image of a run down estate.

Target Audience
Overall from all of our target audience research we have found that stereotypical audiences are 18+ year olds due to the content that is shown in crime movies, like criminal activities and adultery that isn't suitable for an audience below 16 years of age. Our target audience research has found the appropriate audience to be of any one over the age of 18, however saying this a crime genre film opening like ours may attract a younger audience of 16 and 17 years olds as the characters portrayed our young themselves at 17 years old, therefore a younger audience may be able to relate to these characters and may prefer to watch a crime genre involving younger actor rather than that of a crime genre film of 60 year old actor because it would be harder to relate to these character. That is why we chose to appeal to a audience of similar age to ourselves.

As we can see (going from left to right), the order in which the people that are involved in the film are in a particular order. Firstly we see the directors names come up first followed by more major roles in the production of the film. We see 'Screenplay' by Michael Bacall with a background image of someone committing illegal activities, which settles you in to the actual film setting. Next is another director, the director of photograph, with a background image of broken watch. This shows that it will be about violence and things of personal possession getting destroyed. The next two shots are objects in the background with the actors names. There are bullets and a rainbow in the background of these, this is to maybe show that there is going to be action and also good things due to the rainbow, Next we see who directed the music in front of lots of big machines. After we see two people grasping each others hands, this will show that they are friends, and this is typical in a crime genre. Then we see a car driving around, and this shows that it is typical for cars to be in the crime genre. Finally there is a picture of someone who looks like Jesus.
The font in the opening credits are all upper case, this is to maybe show that it is a crime genre which everything is stereotypically serious. Although in this movie there is a slight bit of humour in it.
We also see that the typography is all white, this is to make the type stand out from the background.
Director name > Screenplay > Director of Photography > Main Actor Names > Music Producer.
What If
The movie 'What If' is a 15 rated movie.
Mise-en scene is used widely in rom-com (romance and comedy) films. We see this in the opening scene of the movie as it is clearly set in a city, which is typical for a romance genre film. As well as this we see that the clothing people are wearing especially at the party is smart casual and modern clothing. Therefore shows the film is relevant and up to date to the modern day. Props are used also as we clearly see the phone of the main character Wallace before introducing us to him.
As well as this we see the magnetic words of the fridge
in which we see the objects first when switching from scene to scene. As well as
this win the party we see a lot of people holding drinks, which is typical for
a party setting, in which nearly everyone is holding a drink of some sort or
smoking.
Sound is
also used to represent the genre of rom-com, as we are first introduced to
non-diagetic sound, which is widely used in comedy movies to create an
atmosphere/ tension or even to emphasise the characters feelings. This is music
which is relevant to the setting of city. Also they change the volume of this
music to quieter to allow us to hear the dialogue of diagetic sound coming from
the phone at the beginning of the scene. Towards the end of the scene they
switch music from the non diagetic sound to the music coming from the turntable
in the party which is diagetic sound. This transition from the non-diagetic
music to the diagetic music sets the scene of the party.
At the beginning of the movie we see editing in line with the
music to set the scene. We first see an establishing shot which clearly shows us the setting of the film, this is used at the start of all movies to show the audience the setting of the film.
We see various long shots at a medium pace of
the city and even close of certain buildings, that is relevant to the music as
it shows the busy night life of the city in time with the music as it states
the “sleepless city” this is often used in the genre romance comedies as it
connects the setting/what is happening and emphasises it through the music.
Camera
shot and angles are used to represent the genre of rom-com throughout What If.
At the start we see a close up on the phone Wallace is holding in which the
diagetic sound is coming from. We see various different shots introducing us to
the main character Wallace at the start of the movie. Ranging from low angle
shot to a medium shot and then to close ups on Wallace. This is used so we can
get a grasp on who Wallace is and what he wears. These various different shots
clearly gives who a view of the genre of a drama.
The Purge
The Purge is also a rated 15 movie. Therefore there target audience would be for 15+ year olds.
The Purge is also a rated 15 movie. Therefore there target audience would be for 15+ year olds.
Director: James DeMonaco
Production Companies:
Universal pictures
Blumhouse
Platinum Dunes
Why Not
Overlord
Universal Pictures also distributed The Purge worldwide.
The opening to the movie “The Purge” starts off with
Universal Pictures showing their logo with an animation. Universal are known
for creating and distributing movies worldwide. In which they merged with
Blumhouse Productions as they have a first look deal with Universal pictures.
After the Universal opening animations we see Blumhouses logo after a short
clip, where clearly the horror/thriller genre is identified, showing us almost
what Blumhouse Productions are known or as a production company in the style of
movies they make, for example films like Paranormal Activity and Insidious.
After showing all the major institutions involved in the
making of The Purge we get introduced in to the nature of the film. That is of
violence of a thriller. Where we see multiple high angle shot from street side
cameras, where we can see fighting and killing which is typical of thriller
movie in conventions from showing shots from street cameras to the characters
that appear in these shots who are often male given the exception of one female
in the short opening, but it also acts as an establishment to the movie,
showing how bad the idea of “The Purge” is.
As well as this in
the opening few shots we can clearly see the setting of the movie as it shows
it is America in Jacksonville through the information given on the camera
effect shots, as well as this we also see the happening of the Purge from 2017
to 2022, so we can see The Purge is been happening for five years and he movie
is set in the future in the year 2023.
From the beginning of the movie we hear a continuous droning
sound, even during the showing of the production companies, it’s a sound that
connotes the idea of suspense what is typically viewed to be in thriller themed
movies, and does from the start before the actual showing of any footage from
the movie. This droning sound starts to fade out as it gets closer to the end
of the showing of the production companies and towards the start of the film.
Where the music used transitions to a happier music tone which is stereotypically
in genres of romance or comedy which is a change from the norm of a film of the
thriller genre. This music plays whilst we see the killing and fighting of the
streets of Jacksonville, this portraying the picture that the crime that
happens on the night of the Purge is normal and maybe
even portrayed as an
event characters like.
Lone Survivor
At the beginning of the movie The Lone Survivor we see the production companies involved in the making of the movie and maybe even involved in the distribution of the film. We first see Foresight Unlimited as the first production company that is involved in the making of Lone Survivor.
We see this animation form into the name of the production company of Emmett/ Furla Films (EFF)
Next we see the third final production company that is Universal one of the five major production companies, however Universal may also of done some of the distribution for the film.
From the start of the movie we see a extreme close up of what looks like some sort of US soldier. We also see who the film is made by as it state "A PETER BERG FILM".
After this we see a black screen with just the words "LONE SURVIVOR" which is a very simple title, as in the font used and the colouring of the font is just bold and white lettering.
After this we see more of the training of the US soldiers as we see a high angle shot of a medium close up of the soldier that seems to be unconscious at the same time we see who the movie was created by. This carries on in the next shot where we see a extreme close up of the same soldier still unconscious and we see who the music is by.
Next it cuts to a long shot where a one soldier in portrayed more to the right of the screen with another soldier taking up the left third of the screen as he walks past the other soldier. This is good for the opening as there is movement in the shot and also show the visual effects people.
After this more extreme close ups are used of the soldiers using more props like helmets and gas masks to connote the extremity of the film as this is going to show violence as we clearly see from the opening of the film. We also see who the costume designer is from this shot.
After this we see the film opening from extreme close ups to close up and medium shots as the film opening goes on, we get slowly more introduced into the characters. We also get introduced into more job roles like production designer.
Next we see a match on action shot of the soldier running and next get to see a close up of the character as we see him bleeding from the mouth. This is a clear representation of the
In this shot we can see a medium shot of the two characters, in mise en scene we can see the costumes used clearly establish and replicate the character to look like US soldiers, also here we can see from the green mud being that it makes it look like the characters are actually undergoing the training, bringing a sense of realism straight away for the audience. In the which the opening is setting out what is going to happen for the rest of the movie.
The shots used in the opening of the movie seem to manly stationary as there seems to be little to no movement with the camera itself but is more about the movement of within the shot. Therefore in the Lone Survivor opening there tends to be many extreme close ups and then a cut to a close up. As you can see here.
Towards the end of the opening the audience tends to get introduced into the main important characters, inn which the story of there training starts to become to an end. This allows for a pick up in speed in the amount of shots and for how long they are shown for. This is like the opening is coming to its peak and about to end.
Through out the opening of the movie the sergeants are constantly shown with the camera held at a low angle. This is to connote their power and authority where as the trainee soldier are usually shown at eye level or consist within the shot as the camera is held at a high angle looking down at the soldiers.
At the end of the opening they end it with the director name on a simple black background keeping with the theme they set with the showing of the title "Lone Survivor".
